Training of Trainer Pekanbaru Riau 2011
I was sent to Riau Pekanbaru to attend the program of Training of Training held by Youth and Sport Ministry of Republic of Indonesia (KEMENEGPORA RI). The event took place at a three-star hotel called Mutiara Merdeka Hotel. I was immensely excited that I managed to meet tons of fascinating figures who, in some ways, had inspired and motivated me how to a more civilized and motivated person. Those influential figures I met were: Mr. Eri Sudewo (the one who organizes Rumah Zakat Foundation), Mr. Dik Doank (the owner of Kandang Jurang Doank Foundation) and many others whom I thought were undeniably inspiring and influential. They gave us manners and daily quotes and wisdom on purpose of bettering ourselves, both physically and spiritually. The most in-erasable “doctrine” ever indoctrinated into my notion was “wake your soul up and your body will sincerely follow what it says”. What may be inferred from this is that we have to set our mindset that we cannot change us any better if your willingness, intention, and drive deep down from our soul are not well activated.
Let us always wake up and open our eyes to see what can explored in sake of people’s betterment. If we have more then we have to give the ones who have less. Likewise, if we have less then we have to try so hard to work on anything that may make us have more. Try looking down to see the people who are in need and try looking up to see the successful people so as to keep our motivation in learn something new alive. Let us be balanced in between. Let us improve our country by doing perhaps a small trivial thing we can. The thing that matters a lot here is we gotta do an action at least.

Farewell party of my Senior High School
Yahooooo! I am just so glad to flashback things that I experienced in the past. Well, this time I would like to talk about my farewell party that is too dear for me to scrap. It was held at Senior High School 2 Tebo Regency in Jambi. Everyone appeared excited to celebrate it alongside with their teachers as well. We celebrated solemnly by saying good bye and of course apologizing to each other for what we had done during our interaction we established. We cuddled each other and even some of us shed the tears showing we were naturally destined to always be together. We wanted our bonds would stay glued together but again nothing stayed the same. Things must change. So, what was inseparable was separable in the end. We sadly said goodbye and unfolded our tight hugs whatsoever. We shut down the party and moved on. I am still loving you all. But yeah, it’s life! It still goes on I know!
My move from Indonesian dept to English one
This unexpected moment occurred soon after I failed the Entrance Exam of College at Jambi University. The plot or story line goes like this. In 2007, I intended to take English Education as my as my primary option and Indonesian Education as the secondary one. Yet things turned out so bad. I failed to take English department and it left me no choices any more. It was leaving me at risk of severe frustration. I couldn’t really bear this challenge that time. I was expecting to study in English department for my English improvement but I just couldn’t. It really sucks. Not that I didn’t like Indonesian but I’d just rather be happier to study English even better more thoroughly. I took Indonesian anyway under some condition. It was like I could really move to English department right after my one-year study in Indonesian department. Things changed again. My proposition on moving or transferring to English department was turned down by a figure whose position was the head of English department. Frankly speaking, I was a little disappointed with that denial. It discouraged me to my core. But I was slowly making the disappointment subside by taking it for granted back then. I might not be best suited to English dept. I might not best fit in there. I didn’t just solely regret things that happened to me. I woke up and brought my spirit back on. In 2008, I took Entrance Exam of college for the second time. This time I majored English for my first option. Thank God I succeeded to pass the test at last. I was terrifyingly fascinated to see the notice that said I passed the test and got a hot chair provided by English dept. I thank Allah for what I was given that day. My perseverance was worth everything.
P.S. I wrote it on behalf of my own memoir. If any of you feel offended, then it is none of my business. Please always note that you should read it at your own risk!

My undergraduate graduation
It took place in February 23, 2013 at Balairung (podium) of Jambi University. After we have come so far, I eventually officially graduated from Jambi University. My pride and confidence was boosting when I was putting my robe on. I felt so big that way. Being big in a way that I successfully completed my first degree at campus. Alright, it’s just my first degree. I now hope that I can keep continuing my study to at least PhD or Doctorate degree. If I can dream it than I can do it. Hahaha sorry I get to excited this way. Well, as for the status, I am now an alumnus of Jambi University.
BEING BORN THIS WAY
Looking back, I am glad being born in a simple family, a family that does not have too much money or possess great position in terms of occupation. My father used to be a principal at a certain school in a tiny region in Tebo called as Rimbo Bujang. He is now already a retired civil servant. Well, again, being a school principal doesn’t get us plenty of money. I can just say that the salary paid for doing such job does not really support our family’s daily needs. I am genuinely saying we can be lacking of financial supports if we simply count on it. We should do something else that can back up our income. My mother was and is a well-known masseuse in Rimbo Bujang. She enjoys dong such job that she can keep it going up until today. I, however, think that a job like being a masseuse does not get us enough money to support our family. FYI, may parents have 11 children including me. Can you guys imagine that? I am positive you always can. Every now and then we go through our life in a simple way. No luxurious things can be found in our house like car, air conditioner, etc.
Behind the simplicity lies a great lesson that I can always take from. Being born and raised in a simple family has taught me how to be independent from the very beginning. I started washing my own clothes since I was a third grader (of primary school) since my mom used to be so busy dealing with my younger sisters and brothers that were still little and needed her help quite a lot. Coinciding with that, I also started cooking rice since I was a kid once my mom sometimes counted on me to do so. We utilized a traditional kitchen utensil to cook. Since we did not have enough money to buy good food, we just bought food that we thought were just edible without considering whether or not it contains vitamins or nutrition needed by our body. But now we are slowly moving to a better life due to our economy improvement. What can be inferred from my past (especially our family went through) is that I now get accustomed to living my life in a simple way. I can eat anything without complaining if I like the food or if I just don’t. I am not such an awkward picky eater. I always wash and iron my own clothes myself. I enjoy doing the dishes. Despite the fact that there are tons of laundry services, I prefer doing the washing myself to counting on them (laundry services). I also enjoy cleaning up my rent house since I am used to cleaning up the mess without having to have my mom do the work when I am at my mom’s house. In short, I will never forget my past since it is a great teacher for me. I will always take what’s good from bad, hoping I can be a better man soon. I just don’t want to be such a spoiled man who always counts on his parents in every single problem he is having. I am financially dependent on my parents but I swear myself that I will be standing up for the financial matter myself sooner or later, God Willing.

WHY DO INDONESIAN PEOPLE LIKE HONKING?
Have you ever traveled to Indonesia yet? Well, if yes then you might have noticed that there are tons of (Indonesian) people honking carelessly when they are riding or driving their vehicles. If you haven’t been to Indonesia then you should know this thing before getting shocked as soon as you get here (Indonesia). Here is why.
Indonesians like honking or sounding the horn of the vehicle when they are driving or riding on the street, both in the city and in the village. They keep honking in several situations like: when they are passing a turning point, overtaking another commuter, meeting a friend on the street, and when the red light (of traffic lights) turns green. Can you imagine how noisy the traffic is? I am sure you can. It’s not only you who wonder why they have such a bad manner when driving but I also really do wonder in the same. Well, I am a pure Indonesian citizen but I totally don’t like honking at all, I swear I hate honking! Why don’t I do the honking? I don’t like honking since my lecturer told me that there’s no honking sound in advanced country like Australia (as he once studied there). Honking is something taboo for Australians and I believe it also applies to other advanced countries in the world. It feels more like we are less cultured if tend to enjoy noisy environment. Else, my friend from France told me that there would be a punishment if he honked on the street without an urgent reason. He would be getting a ticket or fined by the government. That’s not all. My friend from Finland told me that there’s a moral punishment if somebody honks recklessly, that is to say, he will be regarded as an inferior or insane guy who does not know what is right and what is wrong. Honking creates noise that is subject to be a noise pollution if such condition persists. In fact, such noise pollution distracts people from enjoying their life since everybody basically wants a peaceful environment on their daily basis. Almost all of my foreign friends were shocked to see the honking habit when they first came to Indonesia.
Well, I am actually embarrassed with this reality. I really want all Indonesian people to change their mind a little. Please do not use the horn to warn other commuters when driving. Please use the lights instead. Use the horn only when necessary. Don’t you ever get irritated by the noise of the honking itself? If you do, then stop honking from now on! Nobody wants to hear your irritating honking noise and I bet including you. You don’t want it either, do you? Enjoying honking merely indicates that you are uncultured. Use the horn of your vehicle only when it is absolutely urgent. Let’s make a good image to the people in the world. Don’t embarrass ourselves due to the habit of honking recklessly.

A DISGRACEFUL ACT: THROWING RUBBISH CARELESSLY
I don’t really know why the habit of throwing rubbish carelessly has been a habit of most Indonesians that I think is pretty hard to break. It may sound very blasé but it really is a fact that is still going on in Indonesia. Do want to discover why? Well, just keep reading through and you might find it.
Indonesian people are not accustomed to keeping the environment clean due to a mistaken parenting that they have had so far. How so? The parents mostly do not teach the children how to keep the environment they are in clean by, let’s say, throwing rubbish/waste in the right place. Such habit has been with them until they are grown up. And the result, they never care about throwing the rubbish in the right place. It happens from one generation to another generation. It seems trivial but it will be a big problem when all people do the same thing over and over again in all places. You can prove it right if you just go to any island in Indonesia. They do not realize the effects of throwing rubbish carelessly that can occur afterwards. But do not ever tell them to change their habit once you spot them doing so since that would be so offensive to them. It may take a while for them to do so. I am a pure Indonesian but I never throw rubbish carelessly due to my knowledge on the importance of cleanliness in life. I have been trying hard to change my friends’ habit (of throwing rubbish carelessly) without hurting their heart. For foreigners who would like to visit Indonesia, don’t be shocked by such reality, okay? It is a major concern that has become a national issue of our government. We have been attempting to find a solution to this problem. I hereby would like to tell those who don’t care about cleanliness about the effects of throwing rubbish carelessly.
1. The soil will be deteriorating as the chemical substance from the rubbish/waste thrown is in-degradable by nature.
2. We will not be able to cultivate the soil ever again in the future as the soil is filled with plastics, Styrofoam, and other in-degradable matters.
3. There can be a huge natural disaster like flooding. It may occur since people like throwing the rubbish into the river. It’s just so inappropriate!
4. The view of the environment will be very ugly since all we see is rubbish all over.
5. Many disease outbreaks will occur and spread rampantly. It may occur since the pile of rubbish waste is actually the host of the disease-carriers’
house like mice, cockroaches, houseflies, ants, germs, bacteria etc. Once they spread a severely contagious disease, people will be infected and
eventually cost their lives.
In short, I genuinely want to advise those who are not aware of the importance of cleanliness or sanitation these:
1. Throw the rubbish you have to the right place so that it will be processed by the environment hygiene service.
2. Put the small rubbish into your pocket and then throw it into the rubbish bin in case a rubbish bin is not around.
3. Separate the rubbish according to the types, like organic and non organic.
4. Put a doctrine in your mind that throwing rubbish carelessly is an action of destroying the environment in small scope and the earth planet in
broader scope. Let’s save the earth by throwing rubbish in a proper place.
P.S.
Don’t be offended by this article. If you are, then you have been doing the wrong thing, that is to say, throwing rubbish carelessly!

when laws are on sale---a destruction is imminent
Many of Indonesians say laws in Indonesian are subject to be ‘on sale’ to those who have the strong power and position. What I mean by being ‘on sale’ here is that laws can easily be bought by the rich (who commits crime/violation). The ones having much money will be safe and free from the punishment they have been sentenced/charged with even though they have committed laws infringement to the core. Matter of the fact, there is an informal confession acknowledged by the society saying that law practitioners or professionals now being in charge cannot really execute the law enforcement as they should. The people have lost their trust, leaving them at risk of not counting on them any longer. They are now unjust and unfair. The cases of scandals in law enforcement like discriminative law executions, conspiracies in law enforcement, and made-up verdicts have been getting clearly seen in daily basis. We can always spot law enforcement getting off track rampantly and no one is able stop it from happening due to, again, money and power. This is a severely horrible reality growing rampantly and contagiously in Indonesia. Such discriminative law enforcement is more or less similar to what Plato says in his book. He says “laws are spider webs, they hold the weak and delicated who are caught in their meshes but are torn in pieces by the rich and powerful”.
The deterioration of the law enforcement quality in Indonesia has a lot to do with the work ethics possessed by the law practitioners are getting weaker each time. There are some certain reasons why they have been doing so. First, they might have been influenced by the people around them and the organization where they work at. Second, the nature of human is basically now so consumptive that people will have to earn anything they want by ignoring whether or not the action/job is lawful. I am here simply hoping that those who have misused the power and position to “play” with the laws to get repentance and get back to where they were, say, on track where they should be in. For the law practitioners/professionals who have executed the job improperly or relatively unfair, please always remember that you live not only in this world but also in Hereafter (Akherat). Once you have done wrong things, you will sin quite a lot and that you will be burnt in the hellfire afterwards. Always remember Allah in any single thing you do, including dealing with law enforcement itself. I am also expecting that laws in Indonesia will get better soon.

the role of youths as an agent of change
Youths are the successors of the nation to make the dream of the country real. Youths have been the hopes of a country in regard of development. They can change the image of a country. They can also change the quality of a country through their brilliant ideas and opinions that are based on the manners and norms residing in the people.
The young generations today are totally different from the previous ones in terms of networking, socialization, way of thinking, and way of working a problem out. The earlier youths used to think rationally and far forwards. They didn’t merely think about a solution and take an action to solve a problem yet they also formulated and revisited it seriously by considering the consequences that may then occur in several aspects. It’s also written in the history that the earlier youths used to be active in social activities. Let us take an example, there are some youths who fought and sacrificed their lives to set this country (Indonesia) free from colonization of other country. Bung Tomo, Bung Hatta, Ir. Soekarno, Sutan Syahrir, and many more have sacrificed their wealth and lives in sake of all Indonesian people’s dream, say, grabbing the independence of this country. In the mean time, the youths seem to be so selfish and not care about social problems their having in the society. Today they are already affected negatively by free intercourse, drugs abuse, juvenile delinquency, and law violation engaging technology uses. No wonder if they no longer stick to what it is to be a good youth. Many like opening inappropriate websites containing porn materials and or gambling in a like way in the internet.
The role of the youths today is drastically deteriorating. They are starting to prioritize their own wants play around with their friends rather than get involved more in social organization. It obviously conflicts with the condition where the earlier youths were in. They used to engage in any social activity such as activity that concerns religion, independence day celebration, social service, and etc. Matter of the fact, Indonesian heroes like Ir. Soekarno, Bung Tomo, bung Hatta etc would probably cry for the fact that today’s Indonesian youths are so far away from where they should be. They might want to cry and be sad about them being so lazy and egoistic to the environment they are in. They really have lost their sense of nationalism.
As a youth we have to realize that this country needs princes and heroes to make Indonesian people welfare. We might have not sensed the real efforts our government has been doing so far but again we still live here. The effects of whether good or bad this country is, have both direct and indirect effects to our lives in this country. So don’t just criticize, complain, or downgrade what the government has done! Such actions will just do no good to our country. Instead, we should go directly to the field and try to find out the solutions to problems faced. It may be done by staying engaged to social organizations available around us. Let us try caring about our environment and country.
The society needs youths having a complete intellectual, creativity, confidence, innovation, socialism, and nationalism as well. Youths are expected to be responsible for keeping the unity and solidity of Indonesia intact and firm. They are also expected to implement the values contained in the Five Principles (Pancasila) in the hope that peace, welfare, and harmony for masses are growing stronger each time. Let us indoctrinate our mind to be so patriotic to this country. Let us unite to defend this country as what the Youth’s Vow says, ‘we have got only one nation, language, and struggle. Let us always hope that we will stay united forever as what Bhineka Tunggal Ika says, where, Unity in Diversity.

building cross culture understanding through international youth exchange program
After the passing of reformation and globalization, Indonesian young generations are slowly losing their patriotic sense and escalating the sense of primordalism and national disintegration. All this is caused by the lack of cross culture understanding covering distinction in language, ethnic, race, custom and etcetera. Thus, the effort on bridging the gap between seriously needs to be taken into account. They should have the chance where they can talk and discuss about those to each other. One of the solutions to make it happen is through the program called International Youth Exchange Program. Bellow are the essentials of the International Youth Exchange Program that is always held by the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Republic of Indonesia.
1. It can strengthen the mutual understanding among the youths from both destination countries.
2. It can regenerate the internationally-minded leaders who can lead this country.
3. It can give the youths opportunity to recognize other cultures of other country, enabling them to appreciate and tolerate diversities and
differences between them.
4. It can enable the youths to build networks, share information, and establish entrepreneurship companion.
5. It can strengthen the friendship between the countries involved.
In sum, let us support this respectable program annually held by our government. Do not ever miss such opportunity if it is already around. One thing for exact, let us spend our time wisely as we always should.

Namun sayang, nasib berkata lain.
Semoga Tuhan mendengarkan do’a ini.

Sekarang Zaman Digital, bukan Zaman Batu!
Jawab saya.
“Kenapa website resmi institusi ini kok gak aktif lagi ya?. ‘Kan saya jadi ribet nih kalo bolak-bailk kesana kemari buat cari info”, keluh saya.

They have lost their social senses. Mari bersama membangun negeri! Semoga bermanfaat. Terimakasih!

Do friendships happen by coincidence or on purpose?
Well, I just wanted to write this story and post it on my personal blog. Here is how I first got to know a friend of mine from a virtual contact to the real one. The onset of my friendship to my friend named Mr. Ahmad Alawi dates back to 2011. I coincidentally knew him from Facebook page. We then got to know each other better. And as time went by, we just made a good friendship until today. Just so you know that we really have much in common; we love talking in English and making jokes. He is really comical and sometimes even entertaining. He has got much knowledge, suggesting he is kinda brainy. We share story in life that we've been through via phone-calls. It’s sort of cheap but efficient. That way, we can keep talking even though simply through phone. We have never met each other until 2014.
In September 2014, I went to Jakarta for a scholarship interview. After I was done with it, I went straight ahead to Tangerang, Banten to meet him. And what a surprise! I thought he lived close to Jakarta but in fact he lives rather far away from it. His residence is around 2,5 hours away from Jakarta. What a long journey we got back then. He actually lives in Sasak Mauk Sub-district in Tangerang. Just to add, the situation where he lives is quiet. I didn't see lots of cars passing by nor the noise of factories etc. All I saw was rather a quiet village inhabited by friendly people.
We technically had virtually known each other for quite some time yet we had never had the chance to meet up live face to face. For that reason, we chin wagged almost all night long to unleash the curiosity and longing we had in us. We brought up tons of topics till we fell asleep, roughly at 2 a.m. I knew him kinda better than I had ever since.
Due to late sleep, I overslept really long. I woke up late, at roughly 5.45 a.am (opposed to my regular wake-up which is at 5 or 5.30 a.m.). I then told him that I wanted to stroll around for a minute to have some fresh air. There I found so many houses that have a poor sanction system. Worse yet, the water plant doesn't even project their water supply service to the people living there due to some reasons. I was wondering why that happened and how they kept their lives going under such situation. After strolling around, I went back to Mr. Alawi’s house to shower and have some breakfast. He and I had breakfast together while resuming the chitchat we had the night before. Still, we couldn't get enough for practicing our English together.
After having breakfast, we went to his mother’s house, which is somewhat close to his house. I met his mom and had a little chat for a while. Right after we thought our visit was enough, we went back him and headed to a Chinese temple nearby. It took us about 30 minutes to get there. I saw a wide array of paddy fields that looked so green with square border lines among them like carpets. It was the first time for me to actually see such paddy fields in a real life. Once we reached the temple, we took some selfie pictures of us and headed back to home right after.
Reaching home, I got ready for heading Soekarno-Hatta Airport to fly back to Jambi. We went there by motorbike. I then arrived there and checked-in. It was amazing how we finally met and talked to each other face to face. Well, we hope that we can still keep in touch despite the space that splits us up. Always nice talking and seeing you, Mr. Alawi! Please do come to Jambi sometime! I’ll cordially welcome you here!

why you should visit jambi
|
Jambi is the origin of Malay people, that is to say, the Kingdom of Malay that is situated in Batang Hari Regency Jambi. The Malay Language in Jambi is similar to the Malay Language that is spoken in Palembang and Bengkulu, which has the dialect “O” in the end of the syllables.
There are several transportation modes operating in Jambi, namely, planes, cars, and ferries. There are ten times of flights from and to Jambi City every day. It takes 55 minutes to fly from Jambi (Sultan Thaha Airport) to Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport). Else, it takes 60 minutes to fly from Jambi (Sultan Thaha Airport) to Batam Islands (Hang Nadim Airport). Jambi may also be reached by ferry or speedboat from Batam Islands to Kuala Tungkal port within roughly 4 hours. After arriving at Kuala Tungkal port, one can take a public transport, which is a mini-bus that goes to Jambi City. In addition, there are a number of buses that go from and to Jambi since it can be accessed from several routes. If one heads Jambi from Palembang, then it will take him roughly 4-5 hours by car. If one heads Jambi from Padang, then it will take him roughly 8 hours by car. If one heads Jambi from Pekanbaru and/or Bengkulu, then it will take him roughly 10 hours by car. If one heads Jambi from Bakaheuni (Lampung), then it will take him roughly 18-20 hours by car. By the way, Jambi is really worth visiting.
